FENVARU: AI Benchmarks for Dhivehi
Abstract
The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Large Language Models (LLMs) has generated a significant “Language Gap” between high-resource and low- resource languages. Dhivehi, the official language of the Maldives, is categorized as a low-resource language and faces extreme challenges navigating this new technological tide. A critical gap persists in the field: the absence of a comprehensive,
standardized benchmark necessary to reliably measure or compare how well different LLMs support Dhivehi across Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks.
To address this deficiency, Jailam introduces “FENVARU,” a comprehensive, multitask, and culturally grounded benchmarking suite for the Dhivehi language. The research aims to evaluate AI and LLM performance across four core NLP tasks: Machine Translation (MT), Text Classification, Named Entity Recognition (NER), and Question Answering (QA). Jailam also shares the importance of creating
comprehensive benchmarks for Dhivehi language, to make the language recognized globally and add official support across modern LLM tools.
